Following the success of the Inaugural New Zealand Arbitration Survey, leading arbitral practitioners Royden Hindle, Dr Anna Kirk, and junior barrister Diana Qiu, in collaboration with the New Zealand Dispute Resolution Centre (NZDRC), have now compiled the results of the Second New Zealand Arbitration Survey.
In this free online webinar, the authors will present the key findings of the survey, lifting the lid on trends within this confidential method of dispute resolution. The presentation will also briefly introduce NZDRC’s new fixed-fee Commercial Lease Rent Review Arbitration Scheme, designed to resolve rent review disputes quickly and cost-effectively.

About the Presenters:
Royden Hindle, LLB (Hons) (Canterbury), LLM (Cambridge), FAMINZ (Arb)
Royden is an experienced commercial arbitrator and construction adjudicator.
He was a litigation partner at Simpson Grierson before moving to the independent bar in 1996. He became an AMINZ Fellow in 2001 and was awarded the Sir Ronald Davison Award for excellence in Award Writing in that year. Royden was awarded Honorary Life Membership of AMINZ In 2021 in recognition of his services to the Institution.
Between 2002 and 2011 Royden chaired the Human Rights Review Tribunal. Since returning to private practice, he has been engaged as arbitrator in a wide variety of commercial matters. He also regularly acts as an adjudicator under the Construction Contracts Act 2002, and as Chair or member of a number of ad hoc and institutional Tribunals. Royden taught Dispute Resolution at AUT University at both undergraduate and graduate level from 2014 to 2024. He is a member of both the Arbitration and Adjudication Panels of AMINZ and is a Principal Arbitrator with the New Zealand Disputes Resolution Centre.
Along with Dr Anna Kirk and Diana Qiu, Royden is a co-author of the Aotearoa New Zealand Arbitration Surveys.
Dr Anna Kirk, PhD (Cambridge), LLB (Hons) / BA (Waikato), FAMINZ (Arb)
Anna is a barrister, arbitrator and adjudicator at Bankside Chambers (Auckland and Singapore). Anna has particular expertise in international commercial and investment treaty arbitration.
Anna is the Vice-President of AMINZ and New Zealand’s Member on the ICC International Court of Arbitration. She is a Fellow of AMINZ, CIArb and ACICA and a member of the Arbitration and Adjudication Panels of AMINZ, NZDRC, BDT and a number of overseas institutions. Anna is also recommended for arbitration by Lexology (formerly Who’s Who Legal) and ranked as a leading barrister by Legal 500.
Prior to joining Bankside Chambers, Anna worked with renowned international arbitrator, Sir David Williams KC, and practised international arbitration at Herbert Smith Freehills in London.
Anna is a co-author of New Zealand’s primary arbitration text, Williams & Kawharu on Arbitration, co-lectures international arbitration at the University of Auckland and holds a PhD in international law from the University of Cambridge.
Along with Royden Hindle and Diana Qiu, Anna is a co-author of the Aotearoa New Zealand Arbitration Surveys.
Diana Qiu
Diana is a junior barrister at Thorndon Chambers, where she works on commercial, public and international law matters, including international arbitration. She has formerly worked in the international arbitration team at De Gaulle Fleurance, Paris, and was a judge’s clerk to the President of the Court of Appeal of New Zealand from 2021 – 2022.
Diana is a former New Zealand representative on the Asia-Pacific Forum for International Arbitration, and immediate past Co-Chair of Young AMINZ. In 2022, Diana was the recipient of the AMINZ Determinative Scholarship.
Diana has written a number of papers on arbitration-related topics. Her first article was published in the academic journal of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and included in a General Assembly bibliography of recent writings related to the work of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law.
Diana is an incoming LLM student at the University of Cambridge.
Michael Jamieson
Michael is the Manager of the New Zealand Disputes Resolution Centre, the New Zealand International Arbitration Centre and the Building Disputes Tribunal.
Michael started his legal career at a national law firm, before moving to a mid-size firm and becoming a partner there. He then moved into in-house practise, having 20 years’ broad experience as a General Counsel and Company Secretary for a State-owned enterprise with operations in New Zealand and Australia and projects in the South Pacific. Michael completed dispute resolution studies at Massey University (receiving the Phillip Green Cup). He has a strong interest in mediation and arbitration having seen the benefits of these first hand.
